Hat and Gear Care

Cotton and Canvas Hat Care

Our gear is designed to go everywhere you want to take it. Made to take a beating but still needs to be cleaned from time to time.

We recommend hand-washing and air drying all our garments to extend their life. Save some energy and keep your gear out of the washer and dryer.

How to Wash your Hat

1. Fill up a tub or sink with cold water
2. Add a small amount of eco-friendly detergent
3. Submerge your hat and swish it around for a few minutes
4. Let it soak in the soapy water for about 30 mins
5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water
6. Pat it dry gently. Do not ring or twist
7. Re-shape it and set it out to dry

Waxed Canvas Care

Waxed Canvas only gets better with age. Each time you wear a hat or use a bag, it will only add to its' character, acquiring a distressed look and a softer feel. Each wear also allows the wax to smooth into the fibers of the canvas, developing a water-resistant coating that protects the interior from wet weather conditions.

The wax coating will document your adventures, recording the creases and folds you make along the way, adding character to its’ patina. The durable nature of the waxed canvas means it doesn’t need to be cleaned often, but inevitably you may end up with some accumulated dirt you’d like to remove.

How to Clean Waxed Canvas?

The DON’Ts:

Do NOT put your waxed canvas hat or bag into the washing machine or dryer, this will damage the waxed finish.

Do NOT submerge your hat in water to clean it like you would for a non-waxed hat.

The DO’s

Spot cleaning is the way to go. Brush off any visible dirt with a soft brush (an old clean toothbrush works well) or a clean rag.

For more stubborn spots use a damp rag to gently scrub the area. If the stain is persistent, add a small amount of eco-friendly soap (not detergent) to some cold water and clean again using a rag. Using clean water and the rag rinse off the soap and place in the sun to dry.

How To Re-Wax your gear

Do you think there are too many creases or folds in your waxed canvas and want to reduce the weathered look? The easiest way is to leave your hat out in a sunny spot, as the material warms up the wax will re-melt and smooth into the fabric. For deeper marks, we recommend using a hair dryer if you would like to reduce the look of folds or creases on your waxed canvas hat or bag. With your blow-dryer on high, hover a few inches above the fabric, moving back and forth, being careful not to heat one particular spot too long.

Waxed canvas has its own memory, but if you would like to wipe the slate clean again you can also try rewaxing your hat or bag to restore it to be closer to its original look. OtterWax makes a great product that can easily be re-applied to your gear to maintain its waxed finish for years to come. https://www.otterwax.com/blogs/journal/how-to-waterproof-a-hat-with-otter-wax

Clothing Care

For all of our clothing, we recommend either hand washing or machine washing with cold water and eco-friendly detergent. Hang or lay flat to dry to save energy and preserve the life of each garment.
